What is abdominal diastasis and why should you be concerned?
Abdominal diastasis is the separation of the rectus abdominis muscles along the linea alba, the connective tissue that joins both halves of the abdomen. Although frequently associated with pregnancy, it can also appear in people who train with weights incorrectly, especially when a fundamental element is ignored: breathing.
Poor management of intra-abdominal pressure during strength exercises can generate excessive tension on the linea alba, progressively weakening the tissue and causing its separation. The good news is that with proper breathing technique, this risk is drastically reduced.
Intra-abdominal pressure: the key concept
When you perform intense physical exertion — such as a heavy squat, a deadlift, or a plank — pressure is generated inside your abdominal cavity. This pressure, if not managed well, seeks the weakest exit: the linea alba.
Correct breathing acts as a pressure regulation system, distributing it uniformly and protecting the abdominal wall. The diaphragm, pelvic floor, and deep core muscles work together to maintain this stability.
The correct breathing technique in strength training
1. Diaphragmatic (abdominal) breathing
Before any strength exercise, you must learn to breathe with your diaphragm. This means that when you inhale, your abdomen expands in all directions (forward, sideways, and backward), not just your chest. This three-dimensional expansion naturally activates the deep core.
How to practice it: Lie on your back with your knees bent. Place one hand on your chest and the other on your abdomen. Inhale slowly through your nose: the hand on your abdomen should rise, the one on your chest should remain still. Exhale through your mouth with pursed lips.

Some movements generate particularly high intra-abdominal pressure. Pay special attention to breathing in:
- Crunches and classic sit-ups: Increase frontal pressure on the linea alba. If you already have diastasis, avoid them or substitute them with hypopressive exercises.
- Long planks without core activation: Without proper transverse abdominis activation, pressure concentrates in the center.
- Deadlift and squat with heavy loads: Require precise breath management to protect the spine and abdomen.
- Intense pushing exercises (overhead press, bench press): The tendency to hold your breath is high; remember to exhale during exertion.
Warning signs you should not ignore
During training, pay attention to these signs that may indicate poor abdominal pressure management:
- Visible bulge or "cone" in the center of the abdomen during exertion.
- Feeling of pressure or heaviness in the pelvic floor.
- Urine leakage when straining (stress incontinence).
- Persistent lower back pain during or after training.
